MARAZION COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION

The first meeting of The Marazion Community Association was held at the home of Cyril Hales on October 17th 1979 after a Town Meeting had been held at The Town Hall to find out the interest of building a Community Hall for Marazion. The interested people formed a committee to start raising funds and to make the dream come true. The site had been identified adjacent to The Long Barn property of The St Aubyn Estates and was eventually leased to the Association when building commenced.

Cyril Hales, the elected chairman, was a structural engineer and made all the plans for the proposed hall, and the committee set forth to raise funds to build it. The first ever event was a Halloween Party which raised just short of £100. The estimation of the cost was that we would need to raise in the region of £50,000 to get the project off the ground. There was great support from many directions and we were promised £10,000 from The Marazion Town Council and £1,000 from the then PDC. A relentless programme of fundraising events were organised including a monthly lottery, dances, jumble sales, cheese and wine, shows, and much more in which the whole town participated.

The first bricks were laid on 1st November 1982 and the building commenced. We fundraised  as it was built, arranged loans and managed to get The Manpower Services to provide much of the labour, a government initiative at the time.

There is a plaque in the foyer of the hall that says:

“The finance for the building of this Community Centre was raised by the voluntary endeavours of The Marazion Community Association, constituted Oct 1979 and the generosity and support of the people of Marazion, The Town Council, CCC and Penwith District Council. The hall was completed and opened by The Dowager Lady St Levan in July 1984.”

Over the years the committee has strived to improve the facilities and to keep the hall in a good state of repair for those using it. Since the opening of the hall the committee has changed, as some members have retired and others come forward, but the aims have remained the same to provide the best possible space for the area for events to take place in Marazion.

Marazion Community Association would like to remember every single person who has given their time and care to make this place what it is, and thank everyone who continues to make it the wonderful place that it is now.

The popularity of the hall is proved by the venue being well used for a variety of events over the years: various regular clubs; weddings; dances; concerts; choirs; parties large and small; shows; business events; health related events; and many others. There are good facilities, and ample parking, and we hope that users enjoy using the hall for many years to come.
